Beaver Review
The Beaver’s new issue hit the stands today (but, yet again, not the website), and consists of a lot of follow-up stories related to last week’s revelations of the University of London Union budget cut, the LSE student locker thefts and the progress made by the Teaching task force, as well as updates on the 24hour Library campaign, the Living Wage campaign and yet another installment in the LSE’s long-running debate on what role, if any, the university should play in the challenging issue of Israel and Palestine.
So much, so been-there-done-that before. But there was some fresh meat to be had, including a front-page item on the protest at a lecture last week and coverage of the major RAG event, Timeless. Another interesting story in the inside page found a categorical denial on the part of the LSE’s admissions department that they had ever taken a look at prospective applicants’ Facebook pages. So don’t worry, your membership in the “London School of Alcoholics” group hasn’t been recorded by the administration.

What’s On
After one European development representative was faced with angry protesters last week, one might think that they would steer clear for the time being. Not so. Tonight the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Jean Lemierre, will speak to the LSE on the subject of Russia and Europe: New Neighbors Defining a New Neighborhood.
When, Where: Tonight, 6:30pm in the Old Theater
Plenty of rhetoric over the past few years has focused attention on the rising role of China. Well, I suppose one might be wondering if all of the talk of an Asian Century is valid. The China Development Society will be hosting a discussion with Bob Gifford, a former Beijing bureau chief for the American National Public Radio.
When, Where: Wednesday, 4pm in U8 (Tower One)
If we presume that there are rising strategic threats as a result of a growing China (as well as the equally fast growing and populous India), then should we consider if the United Kingdom stands to lose authority and influence globally? General Sir Mike Jackson will be speaking about the UK’s strategic concerns in the 21st century.
